President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has come under fire from Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), for giving state honors to individuals he believes are undeserving.

According to General Mosquito, as he is known in the political community, individuals such as Bryan Acheampong, the MP for Abetifi, and Mavis Hawa Koomson, the outgoing MP for Awutu Senya East, do not merit the honors bestowed upon them by the president.

On Monday, December 30, 2024, President Akufo-Addo gave state honors to a few notable Ghanaians who have contributed to the country in a variety of ways.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia believes that the fact that Bryan Acheampong and Madam Hawa Koomson were both "Member Awardees" of the "Order of the Volta" has diminished the honors' credibility.

He asserts that official honors are only given to well-known individuals whose contributions to the advancement of the country are well recognized, as opposed to the two individuals mentioned, whose deeds are unworthy of praise.

He claimed that the award ceremony had revealed some of these honorees' wrongdoing over the previous eight years as well as the government's collusion in economic mismanagement.

Asiedu Nketia said in his speech at the NDC's 31st December Revolution commemoration in Accra on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, that such honors, given their reputation, ought to be given to people who have made major contributions to the advancement of the country rather than those who have shamed themselves as public servants.

He claims that if people like Bryan Acheampong and Hawa Koomson could receive such honors, he feels betrayed that the NPP Chairman in his home region and the Ashanti regional Chairman were not recognized.

"The award ceremony yesterday has dispelled all concerns that the big guy himself approved of all the wrongdoings that were taking place and the wrongdoings that the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo appointees were committing.

Otherwise, why would someone with his head properly screwed up give awards to individuals like Hawa Koomson who killed Ghanaians during elections by shooting them? For what reason should Bryan Acheampong be given a state honor?

"I feel betrayed because the people of Bono Ahafo should have received one of the honors given to our regional chairman, Abronye, and I think the Ashanti people will also be upset about why Chairman Wontumi did not receive it," he said.
