Ransford Bernard Ahiafor, the member of parliament for Akatsi South, is being reprimanded by Edward Van Gyampo, a professor of political science at the University of Ghana, to exercise his authority as the group's leader in screening the cabinet nominations.
He claims that Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the committee's minority leader, is acting in an inappropriate manner that needs to be avoided.
He claims that Afenyo-Markin takes for granted Ahiafor's tolerance of the Minority in order to avoid giving the impression that he is intimidating their representation on the committee by their numbers.
His remarks regarding the three cabinet nominees who appeared before the Appointment Committee of Parliament on Monday, January 13, 2025, to be examined for their assigned portfolios.
The outspoken professor of political science reminded the congressman from Akatsi South in a Facebook post on Monday that he is the chairman of the Appointments Committee and should take that into consideration rather than giving Afenyo-Markin a free pass.
Dear Bernard Ahiafor, you must be resolute in establishing your authority but also avoiding what Aristotle referred to as the "Tyranny of Majoritarianism." On the V.C., Afenyo-Markin must not have a dominant field day. "Please, you are the Chair!" he wrote.
The Appointments Committee of Parliament commenced the vetting of the three ministers-designate named by President John Dramani Mahama on Monday, January 13, 2025.
Leading the Committee was the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament who is also the lawmaker for Akatsi South, Bernard Ahiafor, with leadership of the Majority and Minority all representing.
Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, the designated Minister of Finance and Member of Parliament for Ajumako Enyan-Essiam, took his turn first. John Abdulai Jinapor and Dominic Akuritinga Ayine then took turns being nominated to lead the Energy and Attorney-General and Justice Ministries, respectively.
