According to Fuseini Donkor, the NDC's Ashanti Regional Director of Special Duties, Wontumi's election as the region's NPP Chairman thrilled his party's members.

He claims that if Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Wontumi, were elected chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti area, they knew they could easily outsmart him and establish themselves there.

To the benefit of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 elections, Donkor has revealed that the party supported his campaign and prayed for his triumph.

The Ashanti region has remained a stronghold of the NPP for over three decades now, with the NDC having won just four out of the 37 constituencies in the region.

But in the 2024 elections, the NDC targeted 12 seats and won 8, with one still in contention.

In his post-election analysis of the area, Donkor, a former Sekyere Afram Plains District Chief Executive, said that they supported Wontumi's bid and celebrated his victory because they knew he would "score own goals" to help them win if he were elected party chair.

He was speaking on Onua TV’s morning show, Maakye, Friday, January 10, 2025 when he made the remarks.

Since we knew Wontumi would score own goals for us, we were all hoping he would win. Therefore, we ran for his election, and we were pleased when he prevailed," he said to the show's host, JB.

"Dr. Omane Boamah came to help and he didn't come to order us around but asked how we all could approach it to get the best results," he said, praising the party's leadership for their approach to boosting votes in the area. He specifically mentioned the NDC's Director of Elections and IT.

“Obuasi East we won and we won’t allow that seat to go. You could see the pink sheets have been altered by pen. We’ll go to court and get our seat back,” he added.

Fuseini further disclosed that residents of the region made comparison of what both parties have offered them over the years to influence their voting pattern, the reason the party gained a lot of votes in the region for the first time in Ghana’s electoral history.

"The people were comparing developments of both parties to see how the region is benefiting," he said, referring to the NDC government's construction of the "Kejetia Market, Atonsu market, Tafo market as well as the Afari hospital, Sewua hospital, and many road constructions in the region."

"We'll make sure we complete the Suame interchange and Kejetia phase 2, which weren't included in the budget, lower some taxes, and create an environment that is favorable for businesspeople." All our people need is that," he said.
