Former President Nana Akufo-Addo and the Ghanaian people have been reassured by Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Finance Minister-designate, that the nation will not default on its debts while he is in office.
On Monday, January 13, Dr. Forson addressed the issues brought up by the former president in his last State of the Nation Address before the Appointments Committee of Parliament.
In his speech on January 3, 2025, Nana Akufo-Addo emphasized the vital significance of upholding Ghana's financial obligations and urged the country's debt repayments to be given top priority by the incoming finance minister.
In addition, he declared that his government had paid $346 million to holders of Eurobonds, demonstrating Ghana's dedication to fulfilling its responsibilities.
In response, Dr. Forson reassured the country, saying, "As I've said, don't be scared." We'll take care of this debt.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining the nation's financial reputation while acknowledging the former president's counsel.
"In his most recent State of the Nation Address, His Excellency the former President stated that he did not anticipate the incoming Finance Minister to default. I would like to take this opportunity to assure him that we will not default," Dr. Forson continued.
In order to maintain economic stability and pay off the nation's debt, the Finance Minister-designate stated his plan to enact responsible fiscal policies.
He emphasised that with careful management and a commitment to fiscal responsibility, Ghana would continue to meet its financial commitments and avoid default.
