Joyce Bawah Mogtari, President-elect John Dramani Mahama's special assistant, has stated that the rule designating the referee overseeing Ghana's elections needs to be changed.

According to her, the selection procedure for the Electoral Commission (EC) chairperson needs to be completely redesigned.

The private attorney requests that the job be posted for applications and reviewed by Parliament to guarantee openness and expertise in choosing the right candidate.

According to her, this procedure will improve the Commission's effectiveness and lessen the partisan biases that are typically connected to the position.

In a post on her X Saturday, December 14, 2024, Madam Mogtari highlighted some of the problems that marked the December 07, 2024 polls and stated that the incompetence of the EC during the elections is sufficient justification for the job to be advertised. She said that a lack of impartiality that damaged the EC's reputation was one of the main issues brought up by several Ghanaians during the recently concluded elections.



"The appointment procedure needs to be changed. The appointment of partisans to such a crucial institution is primarily to blame for the degree of incompetence we saw during this year's elections," she said.

The polls were marred by a number of concerns, including claims of misconduct, disagreements about announced results, and delays in result collection.

These issues were used as justifications for changing the chair's appointment. She maintained that if the EC Chair had been chosen based on qualifications rather than partisanship, such shortcomings might have been prevented.

“Our democracy demands that the EC operates as a truly independent body, free from the influence of partisan interests,” she added.
