According to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president and flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), the administration has strengthened and revitalized the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
He said that before to the NPP government taking power in 2017, the NHIS was in danger of collapsing.
The administration of President John Agyekum Kufuor was the one who first launched the NHIS.
Speaking to stakeholders in the Ashanti Region's Suame Constituency on Sunday, Dr. Bawumia clarified that the NPP took over the program in a subpar state. "Under Mahama, the National Health Insurance Scheme all but vanished, but we have strengthened and revitalized it.
We've put a lot of money into it," he remarked. "Illnesses that were not covered under the NHIS are now included," he continued. For example, the National Health Insurance Scheme now provides free coverage for childhood cancer.
Dr Bawumia also highlighted the inclusion of treatment for sickle cell disease.
“Sickle cell sufferers also have access to a drug called hydroxyurea. It is a very expensive drug but highly effective for managing sickle cell. We have negotiated for it, and we are providing these drugs to sickle cell patients free of charge under the NHIS.”
Furthermore, Dr. Bawumia declared that free kidney dialysis for anyone under the age of 18 and over 60 would be extended after a successful six-month trial.
All eligible individuals will receive free dialysis under the NHIS starting on December 1, 2024.
