Ghana's Black Galaxies lost 3-1 to Nigeria on Saturday in Uyo, ending their chances of qualifying for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) for the second consecutive year.
The stage was set for an exciting second leg after last Sunday's goalless first-leg tie in Accra, but the Super Eagles B grabbed charge early with a strong first-half performance, leading 3-0 going into the dressing room for recess.
When Ghana's defense was opened by a long ball over the top in the 19th minute, Nigeria broke the tie. Goalie Benjamin Asare touched the ball, but it was not enough to keep it out of his net. Ismaila Sodiq grabbed the pass, rushed past the backline, and slotted the ball beyond Asare.
The hosts extended their lead in just three minutes. Nigeria's captain, Nduka Junior, prodded the ball into the net from close range after a wild scramble in Ghana's penalty area left the visitors reeling.
Without goal line technology or VAR, Ghana had what appeared to be a live wire when they had the ball nearly in the back of the net, but the referees decided it didn't cross the line.
In the 25th minute, Saviour added a third goal, adding to Ghana's agony. Saviour finished a stunning nine-minute spell that left the Black Galaxies startled by circling Asare and rolling the ball into an empty net after dismissing Nurudeen Abdulai.
