Joyce Bawa Mogtari's demands for the resignation of Jean Mensah, the chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), have been strongly opposed by former minority leader Haruna Iddrisu.

Speaking to TV3 in Accra, Iddrisu stressed that unless Mensah had committed a transgression, there was no justification for her dismissal.

He added that the post of the EC Chairperson does not concern former President John Dramani Mahama.

Iddrisu maintained that as the people's will dictates leadership, the EC Chairperson's position has no direct bearing on who leads Ghana.

He brought up the tenure of former EC Chairperson Charlotte Osei, who had procurement-related problems but insisted that such worries have to be founded on concrete proof of misconduct rather than personal preferences.

After Joyce Bawa Mogtari, a supporter of Mahama, denounced the EC's purportedly politicised position, the conflict broke out. She recommended that the commission, which is headed by Mensah, be rid of its alleged bias in an interview with Channel 1 Television. She also cited growing political tensions and postponements in declaring election results as factors in the current volatility.

Mogtari's remarks echo persistent worries about the EC's legitimacy and openness, with some urging changes to rebuild public confidence in the organisation. Iddrisu, however, maintains that such adjustments are only justified in the event that wrongdoing or corruption is shown.
