As Sekyere South, Kumasi, and Bekwai report infections amid a statewide outbreak, Ashanti Region health authorities have stepped up their reaction to the growing number of cholera cases.

Since October 2024, there have been 35 documented deaths and more over 4,000 suspected cases throughout Ghana.

As of December 28, 2024, the Ashanti Region has confirmed its first five cholera cases, which have affected three districts: Bekwai (1 case), Kumasi (1 case), and Sekyere South (3 cases). Five of the 28 suspected cases were confirmed to be positive by laboratory testing.

The area now joins the Central, Greater Accra, and Western Regions, all of which have recently seen fatal cholera epidemics.

As a result, Ashanti Region health officials are extremely vigilant. Under the direction of Dr. Fred Adomako-Boateng, the Regional Health Directorate has taken the following actions: cleaning the residences of confirmed cases, separating patients and identifying contacts, enhancing public health monitoring, and assembling emergency response teams.

In addition to teaching medical staff how to recognize and treat cases, efforts are being made to restrict the spread. Assessments of the communities in Bekwai and Sekyere South have shown limited diseases, and the afflicted have not used public facilities, the authorities have promised.

After been first discovered in the Western Region, the outbreak has now escalated to alarming levels, highlighting the urgency of taking immediate action to stop its spread.
