President-elect John Dramani Mahama has received congratulations from the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey (GCAG) for his resounding success in the general election of 2024.

His leadership and dedication to tackling important national concerns, including the widespread issue of illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, were praised by the Coalition.

The group recognised Mahama's proactive approach to environmental protection, which was emphasised in his manifesto and public appearances, in a statement signed by GCAG Convenor Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey.

The coalition was upbeat about the president-elect's pledge to give restoration of Ghana's damaged rivers, forests, and communities top priority.

Restore Ghana

In keeping with Mahama's promise to "Restore Ghana" by undoing the environmental damage brought on by galamsey, the Coalition urged the next government to act quickly, notably by halting mining operations in forest reserves and river bodies.

It further underlined how crucial it is to hold illicit miners responsible, especially when it comes to lawlessness associated with firms like Akonta Mining Ltd. The GCAG also suggested that LI 2462 be fully repealed, since they believe it to be a major obstacle to combating illicit mining.

Additionally, the group urged the new administration to extend social contract programs, such as the 120-day commitment to fight galamsey. The GCAG emphasised the need for immediate and forceful emergency action to address Ghana's illegal mining problem in its entirety.

According to the statement, "The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey is still hopeful that your leadership will signal a sea change in Ghana's environmental governance." In order to create a sustainable and healthy environment, the coalition reaffirmed its willingness to work with Mahama's government.
