For the first time, three districts in the Ashanti region have reported five confirmed cases of cholera.

As of December 28, 2024, there are three confirmed cholera cases in the Sekyere South area, compared to one case each in Kumasi and Bekwai.

Five of the twenty-eight cumulative suspected cases tested positive in the lab.

The Ashanti area now joins the Central, Greater Accra, and Western regions, all of which have recently seen fatal cholera cases.

Due to outbreaks in these areas, which they claim have many similarities to the Ashanti region, health officials have up to now maintained a high level of alertness.

In order to resolve the problem, the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate called a conference at the Public Health Emergency Operations Center with all relevant parties, which has placed the directorate on edge.

In order to resolve the problem, the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate called a conference at the Public Health Emergency Operations Center with all relevant parties, which has placed the directorate on edge.

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), district and regional environmental officers, water and sanitation, and all district, municipal, and metropolitan health directors were among the stakeholders who took part.

While district and regional public health emergency committees have been established in all impacted districts, regional teams were tasked with assisting district teams in carrying out suggested steps and maintaining active surveillance.

However, as part of efforts to prevent further spread, the Regional Health Directorate isolated cases, tracked and limited all contacts, and disinfected residences of all cases, which has calmed residents' fears.

All verified patients live in confined spaces and do not use public restrooms, according to the results of the initial evaluation conducted in all impacted villages, including Bekwai and Sekyere South Districts.

Under the direction of Dr. Fred Adomako-Boateng, the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate's authorities are stepping up their efforts to raise awareness and provide training to all healthcare personnel on contact tracing, case definition, and case findings.

In the impacted districts, the directorate has also started case searches and monitoring.

As of December 24, 2024, the last patient was released from the hospital, and all five verified instances have recovered.

This year saw the first reports of cholera cases in the Western Region, where 15 confirmed deaths have been reported from over 100 cases.
