The New Patriotic Party's (NPP) vice president and presidential candidate for the general election of 2024, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has said that voter indifference is the reason the NPP lost the polls.
He claims it was because the ruling party suffered its most humiliating defeat in the Fourth Republic on Saturday, December 07, 2024, when about two million of its followers did not cast ballots.
Dr. Bawumia questioned how so many party supporters did not vote at a meeting on Monday, December 23, 2024, at his home in Accra, which was attended by the chairs and vice presidents of the several committees as well as committee members.
He claimed that despite numerous efforts to introduce such a complete policy to Ghanaians, the party's success was impacted by the lack of interest from voters. He questioned if they had a meeting or chose to remain at home on election day.
"It seemed like our people got together nationwide and decided not to cast ballots," Dr. Bawumia remarked.
The vice president, meantime, thanked the members of the manifesto subcommittees and praised them for creating a thorough policy paper that was given to Ghanaians in advance of the election.
Dr. Bawumia expressed his pride in the committee members' efforts and the transformative proposals in the manifesto, which was given to the Ghanaian people for their consideration, regardless of the election's outcome.
As part of the reorganization process for the future, the vice president promised that a thorough investigation will be carried out by the party and asked for a thorough post mortem on the reasons why so many party members chose not to cast ballots.
Dr. Bawumia stated, "I want to sincerely thank and appreciate all of you for your hard work and dedication in creating such a comprehensive document, which we presented to Ghanaians."
Dr. Bawumia advised members of the various manifesto committees to not believe that their efforts on the 2024 NPP Manifesto are in vain.
"Hopefully, this document will help us all in the future," he promised.
Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the chair of the 2024 Bawumia Campaign Manifesto Committee, was also in attendance.
