Ten heads of state will attend President-elect John Dramani Mahama's swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, according to Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, spokesperson for the John Dramani Mahama Transition Team.
Mr. Ofosu revealed during a press conference in Accra that the event will also include two previous presidents, the speaker of parliament, two vice presidents, and leaders from foreign institutions including the African Development Bank and the Commonwealth.
Parliament will need to move its meeting to the location of the swearing-in event because the inauguration, which is scheduled to take place at Black Star Square, will also involve a legislative session. Access to the parliamentary session will be limited to invited guests, and preparations are being made to provide a safe and orderly environment.
Mr. Ofosu said he was confident in the plans for the event and saw it as a chance to demonstrate Ghana's dedication to democracy and peaceful handovers of power.
"All invited guests and members of the public are reminded that they must display their invitation cards in order to enter the swearing-in area.
The members of Parliament and other invited guests are anticipated to be seated around 8:30, according to Mr. Ofosu. He added that the Speaker would come to the Chamber to join the President-Elect and Vice President-Elect, since the proceedings are set to start at 11:00.
The 28th February Road from CEPS Headquarters to Castle Road Junction, Castle Road from AU Circle to Osu Cemetery Traffic Light, and Starlet 91 Road are among the Accra routes he added will be temporarily closed to traffic and reopened after the event.
Additionally, traffic from John Evans Atta Mills High Street heading towards Black Star Square and traffic from the 28th February Road, which originates from La, Labone, and Osu towards the Central Business District, will be redirected to the Salem Avenue Traffic Light at the Castle Traffic Light in order to connect with Oxford Street.
"The rear of the Independence Arch, the State House's forecourt, Access Bank Car Park, Osu Cemetery Car Park, Ministries Areas, Ministry of Food and Agriculture Car Park, Marine Drive Football Park, and Efua Sutherland Car Park have all been designated for parking during the ceremony.
"No car would be permitted to drive through any of the roadblocks or park in an unauthorized location."
