The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) is applauding President John Mahama’s decision to uncap the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL) which essentially funds the health insurance scheme.
Speaking at the National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, the president declared that his government intended to uncap the NHIL in order to boost funding and broaden access to healthcare across the country.
He believed that removing the imposed cap from the levy would guarantee that the "National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) can have sufficient funds to reimburse health service providers for the care that they provide to the public."
The authority welcomed the new policy and added significant financial support in a press release supporting the president's announcement.
It noted that it was profoundly grateful that President had kept his promise during the campaign to terminate the cap.
“By removing the budgetary cap, the government has demonstrated its unwavering commitment to strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system and ensuring sustainable funding for the NHIS.
"The Scheme's expansion and goal of achieving universal health coverage will be greatly impacted by this audacious step. In a five-paragraph statement, it stated that it will allow the NHIA to increase coverage, expedite claim settlement, enhance service delivery, and guarantee that all Ghanaians, irrespective of socioeconomic background, have access to high-quality, reasonably priced healthcare.
Ghana's National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) is financed by the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL), a tax on goods and services. With more than two-thirds of the NHIS's overall funding coming from it, it is the main source of funding.
NHIA also stated that it would collaborate with interested parties in order to "maximize the benefits of this critical intervention for the collective good" of the nation.
