In the wake of recent post-election violence, Matthew Nyindam, the recently elected Member of Parliament (MP) for the Northern Region's Kpandai Constituency, has urged constituents to be united and peaceful.
Following allegations of rioting by resentful National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters, Mr. Nyindam spoke to Simon Unyan of Graphic Online and asked all parties involved to put the constituency's development ahead of violent activities.
He emphasized the value of harmony and collaboration by saying, "There can only be one winner in an election."
He called for peace and a team effort to repair and grow the constituency, denouncing the unrest in Kpandai township and the neighboring districts.
Mr. Nyindam urged cooperation in tackling Kpandai's urgent developmental problems, pointing out that these include bad roads, a shortage of drinkable water, inadequate educational facilities, and restricted access to electricity.
"The Kpandai constituency faces tremendous challenges," he said. "I have the chance to serve and advocate for the prioritization of these developmental gaps now that I'm back in Parliament."
Even though his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), will not form the next government, Mr. Nyindam thanked the youth and people of Kpandai for renewing his mandate and pledged to keep his campaign promises.
He declared, "I am sure that President-elect John Mahama will concentrate on developing every district, including Kpandai, because the government is for everyone."
Mr. Nyindam talked about his experience after narrowly losing the 2020 elections as he reflected on his political career.
"What transpired was regrettable and ought not to recur in our political conversation. Without resorting to violence, I have won two elections. As Parliament's leader, I lost by a narrow margin in 2020. After acknowledging my loss, I recovered and won by a greater margin. He clarified, "Instead of letting his supporters resort to violence, I urged my brother to also concede defeat so we can move forward."
Mr. Nyindam urged his predecessor, departing Member of Parliament Daniel Nsala Wakpal, to promote cooperation for the constituency's advantage.
We all require peace and unity. We have a same destiny and are one people. I urge him to concentrate on what he can do to help Kpandai's development now that his party is in power," he said.
He also made a plea to the young people, telling them to refrain from using violence and focus their energies on creating a better future for the community.
"I want to tell everyone that you shouldn't let losing an election make you lose your morals. Violence merely causes division and devastation; it does not promote progress. He underlined, "I implore the youth of Kpandai to refrain from participating in violence following the election or letting politicians use them to sow discord in the constituency."
Mr. Nyindam also urged togetherness, pledging to put in endless effort to meet Kpandai's urgent demands and advance everyone's peace and development.
