Makafui Woanyah, the Volta Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has stated his firm belief that his party will install Ghana's first Muslim president in the Fourth Republic with the help of Ghanaians.
Mr. Woanyah emphasized that the NPP's dedication to social justice and inclusivity, which are embodied in the NPP Constitution, is demonstrated by the choice of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as its presidential candidate. “Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia will be sworn in as President after December 7th, and Her Excellency Samira Bawumia will be the First Lady of Ghana,” Mr. Woanyah said at the 12th Annual Conference of Tabitaal Pulaaku in Ho, a meeting of Fulanis living in Ghana.
“NDC General Secretary Fifi Kwetey said no Muslim or Fulani could become President of Ghana, let alone a First Lady,” he recounted, further accusing the NDC of denying Fulanis the right to register as voters and access to the National Health Insurance Scheme and primary healthcare.
“We witnessed the killing of 200 Fulanis under their government. We came to address these issues. Unlike the NDC’s record, our party’s constitution does not permit tribal discrimination,” he added.
Mr. Woanyah urged Fulanis in Ghana to reject the NDC, citing the alleged injustices faced by their community, and to support Dr. Bawumia, whom he described as a tolerant and inclusive leader.
He added that the Fulanis would have a stronger representation in the administration if Dr. Bawumia, who is married to members of the Fulani group, were elected. "You only need to look at No. 1 on the ballot. Your mother, sister, or daughter will become Ghana's First Lady on January 7, 2025.
