Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the National Democratic Congress' (NDC) director of elections and information technology, has criticized the state of the Agenda 111 hospital projects that were started during President Nana Akufo-Addo's presidency.
Dr. Boamah claimed in a Facebook post on Saturday, January 4, 2025, that despite substantial funding being devoted to the project, none of the hospitals are operating at the moment.
He also emphasized that an estimated $1.4 billion would be required to finish the projects.
Dr. Boamah's comments came after President Akufo-Addo's last State of the Nation Address (SONA), which was given on Friday, January 3, 2025. In it, the president emphasized the Agenda 111 initiative's transformative potential and called it a cornerstone of Ghana's healthcare growth.
In order to fill significant weaknesses in the nation's healthcare system, the program was started during the height of the COVID-19 epidemic with the goal of building 111 district and regional hospitals, including psychiatric facilities.
Even if there has been some progress, the projects are still unfinished because President Akufo-Addo's term is coming to an end in only three days.
President-elect John Dramani Mahama has been asked by President Akufo-Addo to make finishing the Agenda 111 projects a top priority.
The departing president expressed hope that, if completely implemented, the plan will greatly improve healthcare delivery throughout Ghana.
But according to Dr. Boamah, the initiative's lack of functioning facilities exposes shortcomings in Akufo-Addo's administration's planning and execution.
"All 111 Agenda hospitals are not operating. Not finished! It will cost US$1.4 billion to finish.
Despite its ambition, the Agenda 111 initiative has encountered difficulties, such as financial shortages and building delays.
