As the two main political parties prepare to end their campaigns with rallies at nearby locations, the National Election Security Task Force (NESTF) has unveiled a traffic diversion plan for the capital's Legon-Madina neighbourhood.
The police also alluded to sufficient protection while warning party leaders to control their followers.
Political parties have been contacted by the NESTF, which is headed by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akufo Dampare, for the second time in less than a week. Three topics pertaining to election security were presented to the political parties for debate on Tuesday. This included the task force's de-escalation plan for the elections.
The employment of "machomen" by political parties to wreak havoc at voting places and the outfitting of party foot soldiers in state security uniforms were other topics of discussion.
In order to discuss matters pertaining to road diversions and security arrangements as the two major political parties prepare to stage their last rallies, the task force met with members of the NPP and NDC on Wednesday, December 4, 2024.
This came after the two locations that the NPP and NDC had reserved for their rallies were inspected by the IGP, Dr. George Akufo Dampare, and a few members of the Police Management Board (PoMaB). Later, in a private briefing, the PoMaB members met with the representatives of the two major parties.
ACP Grace Ansah Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs, told the media that adequate preparations had been done to ensure the day would go smoothly. The parties have therefore decided to urge their supporters to follow all rules.
According to her, "The road diversion will proceed as follows as part of the arrangement: NPP supporters travelling from Adenta towards Legon will turn left at the Ritz Junction, proceed towards Aviation, and emerge on the UPSA road or Okponglo area." They won't have to pass via Madina or Zongo Junction to get to the University of Ghana sports park thanks to this.
To avoid passing through Legon, NDC supporters travelling from Tetteh-Quarshie would turn right at Shiashie in the direction of the UPSA and then turn left to reach the major Madina-Accra road.
