Following the announcement of the election results on Saturday, the Ghana Police Service has reported that 17 additional people have been taken into custody in relation to attacks on various governmental offices.
This raises the overall number of arrests for the post-election unrest to 123.
According to the police, they are also searching for suspects who damaged two police stations in the Bono region: one in Wenchi and another in Techiman in Bono East.
ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Head of the Ghana Police Service's Public Affairs Directorate, promised during a media briefing on Thursday, December 12, 2024, that the police will apprehend those who had fled and bring them to justice.
"We want to reassure the public that we will do everything in our power to have them arrested so they can face justice." We would also like to ask the people who are running: How long can you run? How long do you plan to stay in this self-imprisonment, those who are hiding? We're coming for you and we'll get you jailed, no matter what you do," she said.
The Ghana Police Service has promised government employees that they will feel safe and be able to return to work despite the ongoing attacks on government offices.
This comes after the Head of Civil Service ordered all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to take preventative measures while doing their duties and to temporarily close workplaces where employees feel their lives are in danger on Wednesday, December 11.
She also revealed that they had found the Nissan Pick-Up that had been taken from Ursula Owusu-Ekuful's office, the Ablekuma West Member of Parliament.
The car was taken on Monday, December 09, 2024, when unknown persons broke into the departing MP's offices and took three motorcycles and a Nissan Pick-Up, among other valuables.
While attempts are underway to apprehend the perpetrators of the theft, the car is currently at the Dansoman Police Station. The NDC's parliamentary candidate, Rev. Kweku Addo, defeated the three-term MP in last Saturday's polls, handing him a crushing loss. With 31,866 votes, the clergyman won the parliamentary election, while Madam Owusu-Ekuful received 26,575.
