According to Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere, a political science lecturer at the University of Cape Coast, President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is not to blame for Ghana's collapsing economy.
He claims that President Akufo-Addo told Ghanaians that Dr. Bawumia was appointed to his position because of his ability to manage the economy and that the vice president should be held accountable for any problems that arise.
Speaking about the potential causes of the NPP's crushing loss in the recently concluded elections, Dr. Asante Otchere stated that while the president should bear the majority of the blame for his actions, the vice president should also share some of the blame, particularly for his economic performance.
"In general, you may discuss the economy, and here is where Dr. Bawumia is useful. When it comes to the economy, you can't hold the president responsible because he provided a justification, explanation, and warning for his initial choice of Dr. Bawumia. However, if the economy is in ruins, what do you think? It must be Bawumia's fault. He claimed on Ghana Tonight Monday, December 23, 2024, on TV3, that he himself did not lead the party in the proper manner.
The remarks made by Dr. Asante Otchere come after the NPP declared that it would form a committee to look into the reasons behind the party's loss in the most recent elections, which gave the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) a two-thirds majority in parliament and a significant lead in the presidential contest.
This was disclosed by Stephen Ayesu Ntim, the party's national chairman, during a press conference on Monday, December 23, 2024.
He stated that in order to identify the reasons for the loss, the proposed Election Review Committee will consult with the public and party stakeholders. Mr. Ntim pointed out that this will guide the party's reforms to make it stronger going forward.
"The party will establish an impartial and efficient Election Review Committee in January 2025 to conduct a postmortem on the election's results. The committee will discuss the causes and conditions that led to our defeat with the public and all party stakeholders," he said.
The party chairman went on to say that one important topic the committee would look into is whether a constitutional reform should be made to reorganize the party's internal decision-making process, which includes choosing party leaders and presidential and parliamentary candidates.
