Revenue & Financing Fellow Mr. Geoffrey Kabutey Ocansey has cautioned the Mahama-led government from doing away with the Covid-19 Levy.
He has suggested that the Covid-19 levy be repurposed, renamed, and used for other purposes by the government.
Kwabena Agyapong made the suggestion that the Covid-19 levy be used to fund the free dialysis program in an interview with him on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM.
Despite the government's pledge to eliminate some taxes, he pointed out that the COVID-19 Levy must remain in place. "I'm pleading with the administration to keep the COVID-19 levy in place.
They ought to rename it and give it a new use. The goal for which COVID-19 was created has been accomplished.
However, we can reroute and repurpose it. How can the levy be redirected, one would wonder? We can utilize it to further the free dialysis program. Given the difficulties it faces, we can use the funds for free dialysis.
Additionally, he thinks that the money raised by the COVID-19 levy might be utilized to finish the hospital projects and other infrastructure projects connected to health.
He said that since we would have accomplished a lot with the tax by then, we might think about eliminating it or keeping it in place after four years.
Mr. Ocansey emphasized that if Dr. Ato Forson is accepted as the ministry's minister, he must address waste and compliance concerns as the Minister-designate for Finance.
