In an attempt to fix the inefficiencies in the nation's power distribution system, President John Dramani Mahama has hinted at the potential for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to be privatized.
According to the President, enlisting the private sector to oversee ECG could aid in resolving persistent issues like poor service delivery, financial mismanagement, and operational inefficiencies.
Mahama stated that privatization might be a component of a larger plan to reform and improve the performance of the energy sector when he met with a World Bank group on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at his private office in Accra.
Mahama highlighted the significance of effective energy distribution in accomplishing the country's development objectives while reflecting on Ghana's involvement in the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact during his time as vice president. He emphasized that the goal of any privatization effort would be to guarantee a sustainable energy sector that could satisfy Ghana's expanding economic needs.
Mahama also gave stakeholders his word that in order to strike a balance between the public interest and the need for better performance, decisions about ECG's future will be made after extensive engagement.
"Our entire power value chain will continue to have serious issues if we don't address the Electricity Company of Ghana. Therefore, we wish to resume our efforts to bring in private sector efficiency by privatizing the final point of electricity distribution. To obtain the knowledge necessary to accomplish that, we would like to consult with the World Bank.
