Recent post-election violence involving suspected thugs associated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been attributed to former National Security Minister Kofi Totobi Quakyi and former National Security Coordinator Larry Gbevlo-Lartey, according to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus in Parliament.
Following the general elections in 2024, there have been a number of violent incidents, including attacks on state institutions and government officials, according to the Majority Caucus.
They assert that those connected to the NDC are committing these crimes.
Speaking to the media, Patricia Appiagyei, the deputy majority leader, voiced her worries about the violence's potential effects on security.
"We have reliable information that suggests some members of the NDC leadership are planning these crimes. According to reports, Col. (Rtd) Larry Gbevlo-Lartey and Mr. Totobi Quakyi are spearheading these initiatives, encouraging thugs to carry out violent crimes against defenseless Ghanaians," she stated.
Madam Appiagyei went on to say that there are worries over the safety of residents and public officials because the situation seems to be becoming worse as President-elect John Mahama's inauguration draws near.
She asked Ghanaians to remain alert and notify law enforcement of any suspicious activity.
The charges were made soon after Totobi Quakyi and Gbevlo-Lartey were named to a six-person temporary national security committee by President-elect John Mahama in advance of official appointments.
Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the Majority Chief Whip, also urged Mr. Mahama to act quickly to stop the violence.
"They say they don't know anything about them, but they were answering them when they chanted, '3y3 Zu, 3y3 Za,'" he added.
Mr. Annoh-Dompreh issued a warning, saying that if the situation continues, the NPP will take legal action to safeguard people and institutions.
"We will advise ourselves and, as permitted by law, we will use any legal means within the confines of our laws to make sure that we are not taken for granted if they do not demonstrate leadership," he said.
