Sammy Gyamfi, the National Democratic Congress's (NDC) national communications officer, has rejected the Electoral Commission's (EC) recount of the outcomes of the parliamentary election.
He called the practice a "cantata" that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had planned. Mr. Gyamfi told NDC followers on Facebook that the party is determined to win its battle for electoral justice.
“Comrades, he who laughs last, laughs best. Ignore the ‘cantata’ exercise dubbed ‘re-collation’ being carried out by the NPP-sponsored EC. We will have the last laugh after January 7. Chill!” Gyamfi wrote.
The declaration comes after the EC's recollection process, which saw five of the nine contested parliamentary seats ruled in favour of the NPP, despite some initially being claimed for the NDC.
The results were rejected by the NDC in a statement, which called the process "illegal, manipulated, and a betrayal of Ghana's democratic principles."
The NDC claims that the EC's activities, which were made possible by alleged coordination with the military and police, constitute a "attack on democracy."
They also decried what it called a “unholy alliance” that has led to the unlawful manipulation of results and the disenfranchisement of voters. According to the NDC, these acts are a conscious effort to cause political instability in the country.
