Navrongo Central Member of Parliament, Simon Akibange Aworigo, has announced the launch of the 2025 Independence Day Essay Competition, targeting Junior High School (JHS) and Senior High School (SHS) students in the constituency.
The initiative aims to foster creativity, critical thinking, and awareness of pressing social issues among the youth.
The competition, themed around Ghana’s Independence Day celebrations, invites students to showcase their writing skills while addressing key societal challenges.
JHS students are tasked with writing an article for their school magazine on the causes, effects, and prevention of teenage pregnancy, within a 400-600 word limit. SHS students, on the other hand, are required to write a 500-800 word letter to the Minister of Education, highlighting challenges under the Free SHS policy and proposing practical solutions.
According to the MP, the competition is designed to empower students to contribute meaningfully to national discourse while celebrating Ghana’s independence.
“This is an opportunity for our young minds to express their ideas and offer solutions to issues affecting their communities and the nation at large,” he stated.
The submission deadline is set for February 22, 2025, with finalists to be announced on February 27.
Shortlisted candidates will participate in a final essay writing event on March 1, and winners will be honored at an award ceremony on March 6, 2025.
Prizes for the competition have not yet been disclosed but are described as “amazing” by the organizers.
Entries must be handwritten and submitted to either the Ghana Education Service (GES) Public Relations Office in Navrongo or the MP’s Office at the Kassena-Nankana Municipal Assembly.
Participants are required to include their full name, school, class, and contact details of a teacher and guardian. Plagiarism will lead to automatic disqualification.
