SheRise Ghana, an NGO in Ghana, has teamed up with Charger Limited, makers of HappyMan Bitters and Aqua Bolg, to supply sanitary pads or towels to female students at SISEC, highlighting a greater focus on women's health and education.
The donation, given on November 12th, 2024, is a component of SheRise Ghana’s broader effort to combat period poverty and enable uninterrupted school attendance for young girls. SheRise Ghana’s goal is to empower young women and eliminate the stigma around menstruation by giving them access to necessary menstrual hygiene products.
HappyMan Bitters, a well-known gin, and Aqua Bolg, a top water brand in the Upper East Region partnered with SheRise Ghana to back this noble cause.
Their generous donations have allowed SheRise Ghana and its team to impact more girls and create a meaningful change in their lives.
Teni Sarah, the founder of SheRise Ghana, shared her thoughts on the recent contribution.
“ My name is Teni Sarah Babohimah. I'm a News Anchor at Dreamz FM and a businesswoman in my small conner. I am honoured to be here today. I want to share with you part of my journey and inspire you to work hard and reach for your dreams.
Last year, I received an award as the zonal Icon for Women in Media, Northern Zone, which came with a cash prize of Ghc 4000.00. I decided to use this money to buy sanitary pads and support young girls in rural and deprived schools like yours. However, the money finished just in our 3 or 4 schools.
Knowing the challenges young girls in rural areas face during their menstruation, I decided to solicit support from friends and my own little funds to buy more sanitary pads to continue the donation exercise.
That's how, I started SheRise Ghana, with the support of my team and sponsors like Charger Limited and the CEO of Aqua Bolg, my big sister Humu Khrusum Tahiru.
At SheRise Ghana, our mission is to empower young girls like you to reach your full potential.
We believe that every girl deserves access to quality education and the resources she needs to succeed. That's why we are here today to donate sanitary pads and provide mentorship.
We know that menstruation can be a challenge for many girls, causing them to miss school and fall behind. But we want you to know that your period does not define you. You are capable, strong, and deserving of every opportunity.
Through our mentorship program, we want to inspire and motivate you to pursue your dreams. We believe in your potential and want to support you every step of the way.
Remember, your education is key to unlocking your future. Don't let anything hold you back. You are the leaders of tomorrow, and we are here to support you today.
As young girls, you face many challenges, and it's essential to prioritize your education and well-being. Avoid distractions like boyfriend-girlfriend relationships and focus on your studies.
Mrs. Teni Sarah Babohima went ahead to engage the students on the effects of unprotected sex.
“I also want to talk about something crucial: STDs and STIs. Can anyone define what they are?
But you can contract STDs or STIs through unprotected sex. That is what I want to leave you with.
Abstain from sex and take your academics seriously. You might end up contracting STDs and STIs if you have unprotected sex. Be a strong girl and lead the way! Thank you” she concluded.
The donation ceremony was attended by students and teachers, as well as some of the non-teaching staff who expressed their gratitude for the support.
The Girls Prefect of the School, Eliezer Ayine thanked SheRise Ghana and all the sponsors for the kind gesture and how the pad donation is going to benefit them.
“We are grateful for what you have given us, the pads. This thing(pad) is very costly. Sometimes when we are on our menses we don't have money to go and buy so we have to go and beg from friends . Some will give, some will say they don't have so you will be there suffering. Some will even use rags. If you get any uniform that they are not wearing, you tear and use it to lay your pants and wear. so we are very grateful for what you have brought us. “ she laments.
This initiative is a testament to the power of partnership and the positive impact that corporations and NGOs can have on society. By working together, SheRise, HappyMan Bitters, and Aqua Bolg have taken a significant step towards ensuring that all girls, regardless of their socioeconomic background, have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
