Upper East Regional Minister Hon. Akamugri Donatus Atanga has demanded stricter enforcement of drug laws and expanded public awareness initiatives to tackle rising opioid abuse and dangerous new habits, particularly among young people.
The directive followed a meeting with NACOC Regional Commander SNCO Abdul Aziz Saed, who warned of escalating opioid use and the popularity of unregulated e-cigarettes—known locally as “vipers”—often laced with harmful chemicals.
Saed noted these devices are increasingly common in pubs and hangouts, posing risks to youth health.
He also highlighted illegal cannabis farming in Kayoro, revealing plans to introduce an alternative livelihood project.
The program would shift farmers toward sustainable grain production, aiming to reduce drug-linked activities and boost local security.
Hon. Akamugri emphasized a dual approach: rigorous policing to disrupt drug networks and community education to deter substance abuse. “Our priority is ensuring a safe environment for youth to thrive,” he stated. “This requires enforcing laws firmly while teaching people about these threats.”
The minister praised NACOC’s work and pledged the Regional Coordinating Council’s support for collaborative anti-drug efforts, stressing unity between agencies and communities to protect the region’s future.
