A recent survey has revealed that 53.8% of security personnel in Ghana prefer John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as the country's next president . The survey, conducted by Dr. Adam Bonaa and Dr. Nana Yaw Akwada, collected data from 907 security officers from various agencies, including the Police, Prisons, Immigration, Fire Service, and the Military.
The results show that Mahama is the preferred choice among security personnel, with 489 officers (53.9%) indicating that their welfare would be better supported under his leadership as Commander-in-Chief. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), came second with 218 officers (24.0%).
The survey also asked security officers about which presidential candidate is most likely to provide equal opportunities in areas such as promotions, peacekeeping missions, and further studies. Again, Mahama emerged as the preferred choice, with 480 respondents (52.9%) selecting him.
On the issue of illegal mining (galamsey), the majority of security officers (55.7%) still preferred Mahama as the candidate best suited to combat the menace.
These findings are significant, especially with the special voting exercise underway in 14 regions across the country ahead of the 7 December general elections.
