For the first time, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has addressed the continuing controversy over the Supreme Court's decision to reverse his previous declaration that four parliamentary seats were vacant.

In response, he posted a thoughtful remark on Facebook that seems to prioritize national unity over institutional or personal interests, according to a report by TV3 News.

Bagbin wrote, “God bless our homeland Ghana and make it great and strong, beyond any single individual or institution.”

The Supreme Court ordered Bagbin to stop the implementation of his ruling on Friday, October 18, after he had declared the four seats empty.

This decision has generated a great deal of public debate. The question of whether the Speaker has the constitutional power to declare parliamentary seats empty under Article 97 of the 1992 Constitution has been debated by both legal professionals and regular citizens.

The Supreme Court's authority to overturn a Speaker's decision has also been the subject of intense discussion. Amid this escalating dispute, conjecture has been raised on the Speaker's potential response to the decision.

Bagbin may decide to follow the Supreme Court's decision, according to some, while others say he would oppose it. Less than twenty-four hours before Parliament is set to return, he posted something on Facebook that suggests what he would do next. His word choice seems to imply that there might be more going on than simply this legal dispute, pointing to greater worries about the power and cohesion of the country, especially when he concludes with the phrase "...beyond any single individual or institution."
