A dispute over property ownership is brewing in Kumasi, Ashanti region. Ghana Water Limited is insisting that a property earmarked for demolition by private developers belongs to them. The workers at the water company claim they've owned the property for over five decades and will resist any attempts to take it away.
The situation escalated to the point where the water company shut down operations for almost three days, leaving consumers in the Ashanti region scrambling for alternative water sources. However, after a meeting with management, the workers temporarily suspended their strike.
According to Ing Dr. Hadisu Alhassan, Workers' Representative on the Board of Ghana Water Limited, the suspension is conditional on management addressing the grievances that prompted the strike, including the recent demolition of the residence of Chief Managers in the Ashanti Region .
It appears that the government released a portion of state lands at the Ridge Residential Area in Kumasi to the Asantehene in 2022, which includes the disputed property. However, the workers claim they were not informed about any formal relocation plans.
The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission is advising Ghana Water Limited to use proper channels to address the challenges without penalizing consumers. Until a lasting solution is found, water consumers in the region may face further disruptions.
