The Positive Transparency and Accountability Movement Africa (PTAAM Africa) has petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to remove EC Chairperson Jean Mensa and her deputies. The petition, filed on January 8, 2025, alleges financial loss to the state, the formation of a constitutional crisis, and malfeasance and abuse of public office as reasons for their removal.
According to ghanaweb, ptaam Africa claims that the acquisition of new biometric voting devices and the creation of a new voter register prior to the 2020 general elections resulted in major financial losses of millions of government money. They believe that this spending was unnecessary because the 2016 voter register and biometric devices were sufficient.
The petition further claims that the EC leadership, led by Jean Mensa, deliberately created a constitutional crisis in the run-up to the 2020 elections. The decision to enforce a new voter registration exercise during the peak of the COVID19 pandemic is regarded as compromising public health and exposing millions of Ghanaians to potentially fatal hazards.
The petition also accuses Jean Mensa and her deputies of wrongdoing and misuse of public office, including claims of excessive incompetence, bias, procurement violations, and bad corporate governance. These difficulties are alleged to undermine the principles of free, fair, and transparent elections.
This event follows the FixTheCountry Movement's January 2022 petition, which sought the dismissal of Jean Mensa and her deputies for denying voting rights to the people of Santrokofi, Akpafu, Lolobi, and Likpe (SALL) in the 2020 parliamentary elections. However, after over two years without any institutional action, the petitioners withdrew their request in July 2023, citing a lack of faith in the process.
The present petition from PTAAM Africa highlights persistent concerns about the EC's leadership and begs for accountability to protect the integrity of Ghana's election processes. As of now, neither President Mahama nor the Electoral Commission has issued an official response to the petition.
