According to Erastus Asare Donkor, an environmental journalist with the Multimedia Group, he was forced to flee Ghana before the 2024 elections because he was threatened with death for his investigative work on illicit mining, or galamsey.

Erastus Asare Donkor revealed that his ongoing exposure of illicit mining operations had infuriated some people and jeopardized his safety. On Saturday, February 1, he talked about the challenging time before his brief exile on JoyNews' Newsfile show.

He said, "It's been tough for me for a while, and I had to leave the country for a while before the elections after they evaluated my security." He clarified that the threats had been made verbally as well as in person and in private messages.

Erastus Donkor reported that the intimidation had persisted after his return to Ghana, as he was still receiving unsettling threats from unidentified people. "I've received a variety of threats from people both in person and via email since returning," he continued.
