The Minority Caucus in Parliament has vehemently condemned the suspension of three of its members due to the Appointments Committee disarray, calling for the decision to be reversed immediately.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) said in a statement that the suspensions of Frank Annoh-Dompreh (Nsawam-Adoagyiri), Alhassan Tampuli (Gushegu), and Jerry Ahmed Shaib (Weija-Gbawe) were unfortunate and urged the Speaker to reconsider.
According to the statement, Alban Bagbin's unilateral decision to suspend Members of Parliament without due process creates a negative precedent, implying that the Speaker can penalize any MP for perceived disobedience.
The Minority Caucus cited previous instances in which the Speaker of Parliament employed a reconciliatory strategy to address issues when turmoil erupted in Parliament, accusing him of double standards.
They further claimed that the Leader of Parliament's move to suspend the Members of Parliament is politically motivated, and that their Caucus will oppose it .
Background
Speaker Alban Bagbin announced the sanctions on Friday, January 31, 2025, after a turbulent sitting the day before.
The parliamentarians that have been suspended are Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor (South Dayi), Frank Annoh-Dompreh (Nsawam-Adoagyiri), Alhassan Tampuli (Gushegu), and Jerry Ahmed Shaib.
The disturbance occurred shortly after the nomination for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, was vetted at around 10 p.m.
The disagreement began when the Minority advocated moving the session to Friday, citing worries over the day's procedures.
However, the Majority rejected the suggestion, stating that the process should proceed. The Majority accused the Ranking Member of spending approximately three hours on one nominee, resulting in the delay.
