With just two weeks left until Ghana's presidential and parliamentary elections, the stakes are high. According to Musa Dankwa, Executive Director and Head of Research at Global InfoAnalytics, the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) faces an uphill battle if they fail to improve their 2020 margin in the Ashanti and Eastern Regions. These two regions are considered the NPP's stronghold, and their performance here will be crucial in determining their chances of retaining power.
In the 2020 presidential election, President Nana Akufo Addo secured 72.8% of the total valid votes in the Ashanti Region, while John Dramani Mahama garnered 26.5%. In the Eastern Region, Akufo Addo had 60.46%, and Mahama secured 38.47%. Musa Dankwa emphasizes that the NPP must not only win these two regions but also maintain or improve their previous tally to stay in the running.
