A tense battle between an off-duty police officer and two armed thieves in Ashaiman ended tragically on Sunday, with one of the attackers dead. The incident took place near the Tema-Ashaiman highway, eliciting varied comments from the local people.

According to witnesses, businesswoman Janet Oforiwaa was accosted by two guys riding a motorcycle as she walked to her car after shutting her shop. The perpetrators tried to steal her handbag, but were stopped by an off-duty police officer who identified himself and told the criminals to stop.

However, one of the suspects allegedly lunged at the police with a knife, forcing the officer to fire a single shot, which struck the assailant in the chest. The second assailant fled the area on his motorcycle. The injured robber was transported to Tema General Hospital but was later declared dead.

Janet Oforiwaa expressed gratitude to the officer, stating he saved her life. The event has caused a controversy among Ashaiman residents, with some applauding the officer's quick action and others questioning the use of force. The police have yet to issue an official comment about the incident.
