The recent revelation about the Obuasi East elections is indeed shocking and disturbing. Frank Davies, a representative of the Electoral Commission (EC), disclosed that the Returning Officer was threatened with an axe and forced to declare Samuel Aboagye of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the winner, despite discrepancies in the results.
This incident highlights the growing trend of election-related violence and manipulation in Ghana. The EC's decision to reject results from nine constituencies where similar threats and acts of violence were reported is a bold step towards upholding electoral integrity ¹.
Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the EC, has condemned these events, emphasizing the importance of protecting electoral officials and ensuring free and fair elections. The Obuasi East incident serves as a wake-up call for all stakeholders in Ghana's democracy to unite against intimidation and violence.
To prevent such incidents in the future, it's crucial to strengthen security measures and provide adequate protection for election officials. The country needs resolute action, collective vigilance, and a commitment to accountability to ensure that democracy triumphs over fear and manipulation.
In the 2024 Ghanaian general election, the NDC won a landslide victory, securing 185 out of 276 seats, while the NPP secured 80 seats ². However, incidents like the one in Obuasi East undermine the credibility of the electoral process and highlight the need for urgent reforms.
