Ghana's National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has taken a significant step towards improving healthcare access by announcing 20 accredited hospitals that will provide free dialysis treatment. This initiative, which commences on December 1, 2024, aims to ease the financial burden on kidney patients and their families .

The selected hospitals include notable healthcare providers such as Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. These facilities will offer free dialysis services to all registered kidney patients covered by the NHIS .

To ensure a smooth rollout, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has secured funding from the World Bank and is distributing additional dialysis machines to the selected facilities. The NHIA has also paid over GH¢1.5 million since June under the free dialysis program .

This initiative builds on a successful pilot program launched earlier this year, which targeted patients aged over 60 and under 18. The updated scheme aims to provide critical support to vulnerable groups and improve access to life-saving dialysis treatments nationwide .
