The government of Ghana has issued a cheque for GH¢25 million to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), according to Dr. Clement Apaak, the Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament's Education Committee. This payment is part of the government's efforts to settle its debt to WAEC, which currently stands at GH¢118 million .

While this payment is a positive step, Dr. Apaak notes that it falls short of addressing WAEC's pressing financial challenges. The GH¢25 million is needed to pay technicians to repair faulty scanners, which are necessary for marking objective questions .

The delay in settling the government's debt to WAEC has raised concerns about the potential impact on the release of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results. WAEC had cautioned that any further delays in payment could lead to significant delays in the release of the results .

It's worth noting that the government's debt to WAEC is not a new issue. In June 2024, WAEC disclosed that it had only received GH¢47.125 million from the government, despite the government's announcement that it had released GH¢80 million .

The situation highlights the need for the government to prioritize education funding and ensure that WAEC receives the necessary funds to carry out its operations smoothly.
