A tense moment occurred at today's State of the Nation Address in Parliament, when Speaker Alban Bagbin interrupted to tell President Akufo-Addo that he was out of order. The incident occurred as the President was giving his speech, with loud interruptions from the minority caucus, which indicated disagreement with some of his remarks.
As the minority MPs continued to protest, Speaker Bagbin intervened to stop the disruption. He reminded Members of Parliament that just because their figures differed from those supplied by the President did not indicate the President was misleading the House. "Honorable Members, your numbers may differ from his, but that does not imply he is misleading the House. "He's in order," Bagbin said firmly.
The President, unfazed by the interruptions, answered by claiming that there could only be one set of statistics—the ones he was presenting. He insisted that truth was indivisible, and the figures he was reading were correct. "Mr. Speaker, the figures cannot disagree. There is only one set of statistics, and they cannot be different. Truth is indivisible. It is one and only," Akufo-Addo stated.
Speaker Bagbin, noted for his wit, jokingly reminded the President that he was out of order. "Your Excellency, as an accomplished member of Parliament, you are out of order," he said, bringing some levity to the situation.
Despite the exchange, the President proceeded with his talk, which covered a wide range of topics, including economic growth, infrastructural development, social initiatives, and security. Key themes mentioned included the success of the Free Senior High School program, which has benefited over 5.7 million students, as well as significant infrastructural projects, such as the completion of six interchanges.
