Ghana's State of the Nation Address (SONA) on January 3rd took an unexpected turn as First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo was visibly agitated during the event. During President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's address before Parliament, opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) reportedly heckled him.
In a viral video from the event, the First Lady appears dissatisfied as she declines Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin's hand signal. While her comments were faint, she could be heard stating, "You sit there and allow people to speak to [him] anyhow..."
The heckling apparently arose from skepticism over the president's boasts about his administration's accomplishments. Though NDC MPs questioned elements of the speech during the session, it was later that Ningo-Prampram MP Sam George made news. Speaking to the media, he publicly referred to the President as a "liar," questioning the veracity of various assertions made during the SONA.
Many have taken the First Lady's apparent choice to depart Parliament as a silent protest against what she saw as disrespect for the presidency. Her departure elicited varied comments. Some Ghanaians support her viewpoint, believing that Parliament should show decorum during such significant events. Others, however, argue that parliamentary heckling and post-event critiques are normal aspects of a healthy democracy.
This incident shows Ghana's escalating political tensions as President Akufo-Addo approaches the conclusion of his term. While the opposition continues to criticize his legacy, allies of the administration have advocated for healthy debate above personal attacks or public drama.
As of currently, neither the Speaker of Parliament nor the First Lady's office have issued an official statement regarding the incident. However, the experience has once again highlighted the importance of civility and respect in Ghana's political debate, especially during high-profile occasions such as the State of the Nation Address.
