President John Dramani Mahama is being sued for appointing Anthony Kwasi Sarpong as the Acting Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), according to GhanaWeb. A private citizen called Emmanuella Sarfowaah filed the complaint, contesting Mahama's appointment of Kwasi Sarpong, according to court documents examined by GhanaWeb. Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, the GRA, and President Mahama, who is represented by the Attorney General, are named as defendants in this lawsuit by the High Court's writ of summons.

Due to Mahama's selection of Kwasi Sarpong, the lawsuit has brought up concerns about a possible conflict of interest. According to Sarfowaah, Sarpong still owns stock at KPMG, where he is a Senior Partner, which raises serious ethical questions about his current position at the GRA. Furthermore, without an established Governing Council, Emmanuella Sarfowaah contends that it is illegal to select a Commissioner-General for the GRA.

According to the writ, Sarpong was and maybe is still a Senior Partner at KPMG, which is the same as the CEO of the company according to their website. Furthermore, according to the complaint, the GRA, as a statutory body, mandates that a Governing Council provide advice before the president appoints a Commissioner-General, which was not the case as of January 21, 2025. According to the records, Sarpong was associated with KPMG until at least the aforementioned period in a number of fee-paying agreements with the GRA.

In order to get Mahama's nomination of Sarpong as the GRA's Acting Commissioner-General revoked, Sarfowaah is requesting a court decision. In order to stop Mahama or anybody working on his behalf from employing Sarpong in any function connected to the GRA, the plaintiff further seeks a permanent injunction against Mahama's appointment of Sarpong. After receiving the case, the court has instructed all parties to respond within eight days. Following Julie Essiam's retirement as the previous Commissioner-General on January 20, 2025, Anthony Kwasi Sarpong assumed the position of Acting Commissioner-General of the GRA.
