Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has finally responded to the party's loss in the general election held on December 7. His much anticipated answer follows months of audacious declarations in which he declared with confidence that the NPP will win.
Chairman Wontumi addressed the loss in a social media video, remarking on the nature of human emotions: "Sometimes we cry, and others we laugh." He conveyed sincere appreciation to the Ashanti Region's people for their steadfast support in spite of the electoral setback. Noting the significance of peace and stability in the nation, Wontumi also praised Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his mature gesture in admitting loss to President-elect John Dramani Mahama. "Bawumia’s action is a significant step toward fostering national unity," he stated.
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) successfully leveraged the NPP's handling of security issues and vigilantism charges to campaign on reestablishing confidence in government institutions and maintaining national security, which has been one of the reasons for the party's defeat. Chairman Wontumi's remarks in the wake of the election results show a call for reconciliation and collaboration as the nation moves forward. As Ghana embarks on a new political chapter led by President-elect Mahama, attention now turns to national unity.
