Despite continuing tensions related to the Bawku crisis, the Kusaug Traditional Council (KTC) has stated that it has lifted its ban on the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) political activity in Kusaug's six seats. The KTC attributed the suspension to the resurgence of ethnic and chieftaincy conflicts in the area when Mamprusi fugitive Seidu Abagre was smuggled into Bawku.
The administration, especially Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is of Mamprusi origin, was implicated in the criminal activities of the Mamprusi people and their involvement in the Bawku chieftaincy issue, the KTC said in a press statement. The KTC had urged the community to disassociate itself from Dr. Bawumia's political endeavors and demanded that all NPP political activities in Kusaug be halted.
However, the KTC has chosen to lift the suspension after taking into account the cooperation of NPP members in Kusaug, their recognition of the power of the Zug-Raan and the Kusaug Traditional Council, as well as the interventions of the Upper East Regional Minister and the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs President-elect (Chiana Pio).
The Council also acknowledged that the NPP parliamentary candidates are local residents who have similar concerns about how the Bawku chieftaincy dispute is being handled and the Mamprusi settlers' behavior. The KTC has stressed that no one should prevent NPP members or their parliamentary candidates from engaging in political activities in Kusaug, even in light of this development. But until fugitive Seidu Abagre is apprehended and taken out of Bawku, all other orders from the KTC's prior press conference shall stand.
