Regarding its regular sessions, the Ghanaian parliament has been suspended. Unresolved parliamentary issues between the NDC and NPP caucuses in the house led the speaker to make this decision. The current problem began with a court ruling that ordered the speaker to reverse his decision after declaring some NPP caucus seats void.
The speaker of parliament has only restated his opposition to the court's decision, which is now a matter of law. The speaker's attorney appeared in court yesterday and presented some quite insightful arguments. However, the Chief Justice denied the speaker's request to overturn its original decision. Since she believed that the suspension of parliamentary operations was unlawful, she expressed her disapproval and concerns.
Following the recent Supreme Court hearing, Hon. Sam George, an NDC MP, posted something on his official Twitter profile that went viral on social media. Together with the speaker of parliament, he reaffirmed his audacious position in the struggle to establish parliament as an independent, democratic entity free from outside interference. He brazenly said on his Facebook, "If you believe you have power, come and open Parliament and please your paymasters."
