Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, and the running mate to New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2024 elections, has expressed displeasure with repeated inquiries about the party's performance in the Ashanti Region during the recent general elections.
In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu, Nao voiced his frustrations, saying, “I feel really, that I have to insult the person that Ashanti didn’t bring a vote. What does that mean?” He called for an end to what he perceived as undue focus on the region’s contribution to the NPP’s electoral performance.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh pointed out that voter turnout nationwide had declined, stressing that the issue was not unique to Ashanti. “The whole country, they didn’t vote. We lost 2.1 million votes,” he stated.
The former Member of Parliament for Manhyia South also highlighted that the Ashanti Region recorded a 65% voter turnout, which was above the national average of 64%. He urged stakeholders to avoid attributing electoral outcomes to specific regions, cautioning, “Let us not tribalize things like that.”
The 2024 general elections, held on December 7, 2024, saw the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, John Dramani Mahama, winning with 57% of the vote. The NPP faced significant losses, prompting calls for introspection within the party.
