The Institution of Engineering and Technology Ghana (IET-GH) held its 38th Annual General Meeting (AGM), where Executive Director Engr Seth Ayim presented a detailed report on the institution’s progress, challenges, and achievements for 2024.

In his address, Engr. Ayim expressed gratitude to members, past presidents, and stakeholders for their steadfast support, emphasizing that despite challenges, the institution made significant strides in promoting engineering excellence and contributing to national development.

Engr. Ayim highlighted advancements in internal operations, including the introduction of a second internet source from MTN to enhance office connectivity. A transition from manual to electronic filing is also underway to improve document accessibility and organization.

On examination systems, Engr. Ayim noted that IET-GH continues with manual processes as the Engineering Council explores electronic alternatives.

The institution expanded its reach by establishing student chapters at leading universities, including KNUST, RMU, and Accra Technical University, with plans to grow nationwide. Additionally, institutional representatives were appointed to drive membership growth in key organizations like the Electricity Company of Ghana and Ghana Water Company.

The AGM also marked the conclusion of elections for a new president, held from October 15 to 21. Results were expected to be announced at the meeting, with the new leader assuming office in 2025.

IET-GH’s commitment to nurturing engineering talent was evident through its scholarship program. In 2023, five students from universities such as Accra Technical University and the University of Mines and Technology received scholarships, raising the total beneficiaries to 15.

The institution conducted 32 of its planned 41 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programs.

A standout was the Cement Academy programme at Cape Coast Technical University, supported by Continental Blue Investment, with plans to expand nationwide in collaboration with Supercem.

IET-GH maintained strong collaborations with government agencies and professional bodies. Through partnerships with CTVET and the Engineering Council, the institution contributed to developing occupational standards for engineering fields, including steel bending and construction machinery operations.

Additionally, IET-GH played an active role in the GTEC accreditation process for university engineering programmes, ensuring alignment with national and international standards.

The institution unveiled an official anthem, composed by Dr. Samuel Agbenyo, to symbolize unity and dedication to excellence. The anthem will be performed at AGMs and induction ceremonies.

Members also represented IET-GH at high-profile events such as the ESRI User Conference in West Africa and the 2024 joint CIB W099 & W123 international conference in Ghana.

IET-GH registered 192 new Professional Engineers, 64 Engineering Technologists, and 321 Engineering Craftspersons in 2024, bringing the total registrations since 2021 to over 3,500.

Engr. Ayim acknowledged ongoing challenges, such as tenancy issues with the Ghana Museum and Monuments Board. Efforts to regularize the institution’s title and address rent arrears are in progress.
