The government has expressed disappointment over Organised Labour’s decision to move forward with a nationwide strike on October 10, despite recent discussions and agreements aimed at tackling illegal mining, or "galamsey."
Organised Labour has been advocating for the president to declare a state of emergency on illegal mining and implement comprehensive, long-term solutions to address the issue.
In a statement released on Monday, October 7, Information Minister Fatimatu Abubakar expressed surprise at Organised Labour’s insistence on continuing with the strike, given the government’s commitment to combat illegal mining.
The government reiterated its support for calls urging presidential candidates to sign a pact against illegal mining and announced plans to revoke the Environmental Protection Regulations 2023 (L.I 2462) when Parliament reconvenes.
