The National Democratic Congress's presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, has reaffirmed his opposition to LGBTQ activities in Ghana. Mahama characterized homosexuality and lesbianism as taboos during a meeting with the clergy in Kumasi on Monday, November 11, 2024, claiming that they go against both Christian teachings and Ghanaian traditional values.
Mahama emphasized that LGBT acts should not be encouraged or accepted in the country since they are inappropriate, especially for the younger generation. For us Christians, it is considered improper for a man to engage in sexual relations with another man and for a woman to do the same with another woman. Don't discuss marriage much. In order to prevent our children from being exposed to LGBTQ+ culture, let's all work to combat it," he said.
Mahama made a strong plea to the clergy, asking them to continue to oppose LGBTQ activities. He bemoaned the Western world's attempts to encourage and demand for LGBTQ activities to be accepted in Ghana, attributing this outside pressure to the financial assistance that many African states receive from Western countries. He proposed that calls for acceptance of LGBTQ activities are frequently linked to this kind of support.
"Because it goes against our traditions and customs, Christians, Muslims, imams, and minor gods have all voiced their opposition to LGBTQ+. Not all of them are in favor of the practice, even in the East. In America, LGBTQ+ activities are not supported by the Evangelical Church. Their administration has, nevertheless, been working to promote the bill in Ghana and other countries. However, only African nations are subject to that pressure, as we approach them to plead for assistance. Thus, their influence over us. They remain silent on this subject when they visit Saudi Arabia since it is forbidden, he continued.
