On Wednesday, December 4, 2024, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the former majority leader and member of parliament for Suame, has warned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the 2024 elections. He stressed that if the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) receives 30% of the vote in the Ashanti Region, they could win the polls on December 7. The Suame MP emphasized the Ashanti Region's strategic significance to the NPP in an appearance on Angel TV, characterizing it as the party's electoral bastion.
"Your heart is located where your property is. The Ashanti Region is the NPP's heart since it always receives a large number of votes there," he said. Although the NDC has historically dominated the Volta Region, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu clarified that in an effort to improve their electoral chances, they have been increasingly focusing on the Ashanti Region. "The opposition party has been vocal about its goal of achieving a 30% share of the region's votes," he said, adding that "even though the NDC doesn't win the Ashanti Region, they get a lot of votes from here."
He issued a warning, saying, "The NDC has won the election if they can secure 30% and the NPP should disregard the election." This situation, he claimed, highlights how critical it is that the NPP step up its efforts to garner support in its heartland. Because it regularly generates sizable numbers of votes for the ruling party, the Ashanti Region has long been seen as the foundation of the NPP's electoral success.
