According to the Electoral Commission, any vote cast in favor of Akua Donkor of the Ghana Freedom Party shall be regarded as a rejected ballot.
Madam Akua Donkor, the founder and presidential candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party, passed away just weeks before the election. She was one of the 13 candidates on the ballot. In order for her successor to be listed on the ballot, his party was unable to fulfill the conditions. The Electoral Commission chose to proceed with the printing of the ballots with Akua Donkor's photo still on them in order to save time and money by not having to reprint them and to avoid bothering any political party with their original selected numbers on the paper.
With fourteen days to go to the polls, the Electoral Commission released a press release outlining a new rule for post-election vote counting. It states that votes cast in support of Madam Akua Donkor will be counted as Rejected Ballots because the late woman's picture and party insignia are still on the ballot. The public, the Commission's temporary and permanent employees, and Party Agents have all been advised by the Commission to pay attention to and exercise caution about the new directions and all other presidential candidates.
